ESG fashion jobs

ESG is where fashion has to prove what it claims. Environmental, social and governance work turns a brand’s commitments into measured, audited, reportable numbers, and European regulation has moved it from a voluntary report at the back of the annual accounts to a legal obligation with deadlines attached.

Inside ESG

ESG roles in fashion sit between the studio and the balance sheet. They gather emissions and materials data across a supply chain that a brand rarely owns, run human rights and environmental due diligence on suppliers, answer the questions investors and retailers now ask before they commit, and prepare the disclosures the business will be held to.

The titles vary more than the work does. A brand may hire an ESG manager, a sustainability reporting lead, a compliance analyst, or a due diligence specialist, and mean roughly the same remit. Smaller labels fold it into one role alongside sourcing or operations; larger groups split reporting, compliance and supplier engagement across a team.

What the work needs is the ability to hold a standard and a spreadsheet at the same time. Familiarity with the reporting frameworks matters, but so does knowing how a tier two supplier actually answers a data request, and what to do when the answer does not arrive.

Common questions

About ESG

What does an ESG role in fashion actually involve?

Collecting and verifying environmental and social data across the supply chain, running supplier due diligence, and preparing the disclosures the brand reports against. Most roles combine data work, supplier contact, and reporting.

How is ESG different from a sustainability role?

Sustainability work often sits with product and materials decisions. ESG work is weighted toward measurement, governance and disclosure, so it reports into finance, legal or operations as often as it does into product.

Do I need a fashion background to work in ESG?

Not always. Brands hire from consultancy, audit and manufacturing as well as from fashion, because the reporting frameworks transfer. Understanding how a garment supply chain is structured is what shortens the learning curve.
